BASE REALIGNMENT AND CLOSURE 2005

  • What is BRAC?

    • "BRAC" is an acronym which stands for base realignment and closure. 1

    • It is a process the Department of Defense uses to recognize its base structure or military towns so that they can more effectively support our forces. 2

    • In 1998, the Pentagon determined that it had 20-25% more installation capacity than it needed, or would need, in the future. They estimated that they could save $7 billion a year by consolidating operations. 2

    • By Law - The BRAC provess started in 2005 and must be completed by 2011. 2

  • Why is BRAC important?

    • First and foremost, BRAC will improve the effectiveness and readiness of our Armed Forces. 2

    • Secondly, the three major Department of Defense organizations it will bring to Fort Meade will add 5,700 more positions and increase the economic impact on our region by an additional one billion dollars. 2
